1983 . . . Notes to a Merman
the instrument
was an appendage
of his body
of his soul
and he lives
tomorrow
and the wails and moans
of an unearthly gender
still render
many people helpless
to the swirling sounds
of the outer bounds
he went into the ocean
but he did not drown
/he lives\
there are those of us who
may or may not have seen
1983
but Atlantis is waiting
drifting under the sea
bold as love, a new rising Sun
a message of love up from the skies of manic depression
a nightbird flying over the machine gun
a cry of love, a band of gypsys
a rainbow bridge
connecting souls –
FREEDOM
the machine has done its work once again
as our minds are left dazed by the screaming wind
while sand castles melt and fall into dimensions unknown
we can say that we have learned,
but we have not grown
the music follows the medium of the universe –
confusing, but not contumacious –
it flows turbulent, but not tempestuous
into hearts that are gracious
to be reborn
and disseminate
and be born again
the instrument
was an appendage
p.s.
i remember the inner-fold
and the muddy bowl
i was sixteen
and saw the LIFE magazine:
October 3, 1969 Vol. 67 No. 14
first published in Amerrykkkan Mau Mau-1990

Voodoo Child
i saw u thru the amplified soundz
tearing down mountains with the edge of your hand
i envisioned a prophecy thru yur vibrant strings
that most mortals could not comprehend
i did not smoke weed or mount King Heroin’s steed
and yet a machine-gun tore my body all to pieces
i traveled thru sand castles and moonbeams
i drifted on seas of old heartbreaks
i lived yur electric dreams
just a message from a voodoo child –
a requiem of old forgotten songs and faded memories
an escape from social oblivion –
a poem from a passenger
this is the last song i’ll sing fer u
tho u will always remain in my heart
i know the changes the people put u thru
and i guess that is why u had to depart
but God loves yur sound
and loves u the way u are
and as i see yur soul heavenbound
i hear the voodoo strings of yur loud guitar . . .
take me away,
Voodoo Chile
